Statement Reaffirming Academic Freedom and Open Inquiry

In light of recent threats and harassment directed toward some of our Notre Dame colleagues, we reaffirm our bedrock commitment to academic freedom. We condemn intimidation, harassment, threats, or any form of violence against individuals because of their participation in an academic community. We stand in solidarity with our Notre Dame colleagues who have recently been subjected to these forms of violence.

Academic freedom is central to the mission of the Keough School of Global Affairs. As members of the Keough School, we seek to advance integral human development—the development of the whole person and of all persons—through research, policy, and practice. We are a diverse community of learners with differing views on important contemporary issues. We welcome difference and debate. But we do not condone attempts to curtail the exercise of academic freedom, or actions that compromise the safety and wellbeing of our colleagues.

Academic freedom is also central to the important mission of the University of Notre Dame. More than five decades ago, the landmark Land O’Lakes Statement on The Idea of the Catholic University highlighted that “institutional autonomy and academic freedom are essential conditions of life and growth and indeed of survival for Catholic universities as for all universities.” In these tumultuous and fractious times, we unequivocally state our support of this principle and commit to its defense in our academic community.
