May 3, 2018 — The Keough School of Global Affairs recently welcomed more than 100 guests to a private reception celebrating the opening of a new Washington, DC office. Located at 1400 16th Street NW, near DuPont Circle and blocks from several embassies, think tanks, and the World Bank, the Keough School now provides a base of operations for the Notre Dame community to engage in global policy.

The Washington office will highlight the work of faculty through public fora and speaking events, provide career support for students, and help build a strong network for Notre Dame alumni in Washington. Inspired by Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C, who has called for “civil discourse as a way to find common ground rather than demonize those with a different opinion,” the School will welcome a diversity of voices.

“The new Washington office provides access to all the power centers in Washington, where students with a hunger for justice can make an impact and get globally connected,” executive director Maura Policelli explained in her opening remarks.

Two members of Congress, also Notre Dame alumni, spoke at the reception. U.S. Congressman Brendan Boyle ’99 described himself as “an unabashedly proud Notre Dame alum.” He also expressed hope that, “DC will benefit from having Notre Dame here, as much as the new DC office will enhance Notre Dame.”

Warren Davidson

The reception provided an opportunity for alumni and policymakers to network across the political spectrum. Among the many distinguished guests were World Bank Chief Economist Shanta Devarajan, shown here speaking with US Congressman Warren Davidson ’05 MBA.

Davidson said he is encouraged that students will now be able to witness global policy formation first-hand. Both congressional members closed their statements with Notre Dame’s signature rallying cry: “Go Irish!”
