This event has now concluded. A full-length recording is available below.

Location: 1400 16th St NW, Washington, DC

Social media platforms are having wide impacts on conflict dynamics around the world. Activists use the platforms to promote democracy and human rights, while autocrats use the platforms for surveillance and propaganda. Although media coverage of these impacts typically focuses on Western democracies, researchers in the Southern Hemisphere are also documenting local impacts in their countries.

Join us for a panel discussion on Social Media Impacts on Conflict and Democracy: The Techtonic Shift, a new book that analyzes this dynamic and presents overlooked research from the Global South. Hear insights from the book’s contributors, who will illustrate the dramatic impact social media technology is having on social and political dynamics around the world as they share examples and case studies from India, Venezuela, and beyond.

A reception will follow the panel discussion.

Presented by the Keough School of Global Affairs and the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab.
