Foreword
by Mary Gallagher, Marilyn Keough Dean, Keough School of Global Affairs, University of Notre Dame
"It is an honor to introduce this volume, which represents a remarkable moment in the life of the Keough School of Global Affairs—an institution founded with the conviction that the world’s most urgent challenges demand both intellectual rigor and moral imagination.
At the heart of this work is the Keough School’s foundational commitment to Integral Human Development (IHD): the belief that human dignity, the common good, and solidarity must guide how we understand and engage with issues of conflict, inequality, governance, and sustainability. Over the past decade, this commitment has shaped our research, teaching, and partnerships across the globe. This volume—deeply interdisciplinary and unflinchingly honest—offers a snapshot of that work in action.
Collected here are the voices of scholars and practitioners grappling with the real-world complexities of translating values into policies, research into practice, and global ambitions into local realities. These essays and dialogues reflect both the possibilities and the limits of our current knowledge. They name the gaps, embrace the tensions, and—above all—demonstrate the humility that comes with serious inquiry on behalf of the most vulnerable.
As the new Dean, I am deeply moved by this legacy and energized by the road ahead. This volume, introduced by my predecessor, Dean Scott Appleby, invites us to learn not just from what has been accomplished, but from what remains undone. In that sense, it is both a landmark and a launchpad: a testament to the Keough School’s first ten years, and a call to carry forward the work of Integral Human Development with renewed urgency, creativity, and courage. As we begin our second decade, we are strengthened by the accomplishments captured in this volume and we are emboldened to continue. I invite you to read, reflect, and join us."
