Catherine Maloney

Catherine Maloney received a B.S. in behavioral neuroscience from St. Edward’s University in 2016 and an M.Sc. in global mental health from the University of Glasgow in 2018. Her research interests focus on the implementation and evaluation of mental health interventions for violence-exposed youth and families in cross-cultural settings. She is also interested in understanding how diverse forms of violence (e.g., direct, structural) influence youths’ psychosocial development, with a particular consideration of how these violence forms interact across social-ecological levels (e.g., individual, family, community).

Catherine’s dissertation evaluates the role of direct and structural violence exposure on the mental health of Palestinian adolescents living in the West Bank and Gaza, both directly and through the family system. Notably, the project incorporates mixed method data (quantitative, observational, qualitative) collected from adolescents and their parents.

By further understanding pathways of risk and resilience, Catherine hopes to engage in community-based participatory research to develop culturally-tailored interventions that support a strong start for children and families.
