UN resolutions may seem like cheap talk. But they might actually work.

In an op-ed for The Washington Post, Matthew Hauenstein, postdoctoral research associate, Peace Accords Matrix, and Madhav Joshiassociate research professor, Peace Accords Matrix, evaluated the relationship between Security Council resolutions and peace agreement implementation.

“We find that without either UN peacekeeping or Security Council resolutions, signatories complete 57 percent of an agreement’s revisions on average. Security Council resolutions increase the implementation rate to 78 percent.”
