Statement against violence in response to mass shootings in Atlanta

The Keough School’s Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies mourns the deaths of eight shooting victims, many of them Asian women, in Georgia on March 16. We lift their loved ones in support and prayer.

We condemn this shooting just as we condemn the rising crime, violence, and aggression toward those of Asian descent, especially women, in the United States.

We believe these murders should be viewed within the broader scope of racial violence targeting the Asian American community during the pandemic, regardless of what determination is made regarding the shooter’s motivation.

The Liu Institute will continue to work toward confronting and dismantling systems of white supremacy that dehumanize, delegitimize, and make invisible Asians and other people of color.
