The Nanovic Institute for European Studies offers this grant to faculty for research projects connected to Ukraine and Ukrainian Studies. Projects should have a duration of 12 to 24 months.
Eligible Expenses
- Research/data-gathering expenses.
- Research grants for Ukrainian partners:
- UCU faculty Principal Investigator may receive prorated stipend of up to $2,500 per/year for contributions to the project (up to 2 years)
- 1 Co-Principal Investigator may receive prorated stipend of up to $1,500/year for contributions to the project (up to 2 years)
- 2 student researchers may receive up to $500 per semester (up to 2 semesters each).
- Research funds for Notre Dame students (paid hourly).
- Costs associated with organizing meetings and workshops related to the research projects (e.g., travel, lodging, meals, etc.).
- Expenses associated with the creation and dissemination of outputs.
Key Dates
When the academic calendar is in session, these proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis with grant decisions extended within six weeks of submission. When the academic calendar is not in session, please allow up to ten weeks for review and decision. The grant aims to deepen Notre Dame’s links to Ukraine, especially UCU, and to deepen Notre Dame’s contribution to academic research in the area of Ukrainian Studies.

Evaluation Criteria
Strength of the proposal, budget alignment, and its capacity to advance the mission of the Nanovic Institute and European studies. Projects should have a duration of 12-24 months on topics related to Ukraine and Ukrainian Studies; proposals from all disciplines (humanities, social sciences, global affairs, business, law, architecture, engineering, sciences, and the arts) will be accepted; interdisciplinary projects are welcome. Priority will be given to research projects exploring normative aspects of Ukrainian Studies (e.g., religious aspects, moral aspects, special attention to the peripheries and the most vulnerable, aspects of integral human development, aspects of resilience and recovery, challenges of justice and peace, etc.) and to proposals jointly developed with faculty colleagues at Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU). Each project may have one or two Principal Investigators (PIs) and can have additional Co-PIs; one PI has to be from Notre Dame, an additional PI/Co-PI from UCU is encouraged. The projects are expected to serve Notre Dame’s commitment to Ukraine and Notre Dame’s partnership with UCU. It is expected that each research project will lead to academic outputs (especially co-authored publications and joint events) and include an international dissemination strategy. Project selection for the grants will be competitive and made in consultation with the leadership of Ukrainian Catholic University.
